Resizing Images

Enlarging or reducing images whilst maintaining the same dimensions is easy. But what if you want to change the width, but not the height (or vice versa)? Or enlarge a selected part of a photograph? Or even a single element within a photograph?
Photograph resized to fit collage matte

Example 1

This photograph was to be included in a collage frame using a pre-cut mat. The original - below left - did not fit the mat. It could have been enlarged to fit the height of the mat, but that would have cropped too much off the sides (below right). Instead, the image was expanded at the top so that the photograph could be reduced in width to fit the mat (left).

Example 2

The photograph, below right, was to be used in a collage frame. It was much too narrow for its destined window in the mat. The image was expanded sideways, and the three young ladies enlarged a little.

Example 3

This photograph, below right, suffers from multiple maladies. In addition to being faded and having developed an orange color cast, it is also badly composed, with the subject - the house - being too distant, and off centre. The resized image, below left, has been color corrected, then enlarged and cropped to focus on the house. In addition, a small figure standing in front of the house in the original has been edited out.

Example 4

This is every fisherman's dream come true! Not only can whole photographs be resized, but individual elements within a photograph can be resized too. The original photograph is shown below right. The camera never lies, correct?
